STS-116 Roll Out to the Launch Pad

Space Shuttle Discovery makes it to the launch pad and the picture under that one is of the payload ready to be installed in the cargo bay.

Atlantis? I think you mean it's the Discovery.

I've always wondered why is the cargo loaded at the pad instead of at the VAB? Both it and the shuttle have to be moved to the pad anyway.
