STS-122: Flight Day 6


The protruding blanket on Atlantis's right OMS pod has been cleared for re-entry "as is" in its current condition. All the the testing and evaluations by the analysis team has calculated there will be no risk to the vehicle during re-entry.

Plenty of analysis and checks were taken to approve this condition. I am confident with the testing we did and the analytical results. No worries. :)

and... what cause this kind of...damage? air friction? a crash with space... rubbish?

Does the clearance to fly back "as is' is given basis the fact that heat wave might not hit directly on the protruding surface ?
What is the approximate temperature expected at the protruding edge during descent ?
Hoping for a safe return :)
