Update: 2009 Astronaut Selection

The Astronaut Selection Office has selected 450 highly qualified applicants. They are currently in the process of contacting the references the applicants provided and mailing out a medical form for the applicants to get a medical evaluation. From information provided by the references and the medical evaluation, the selection panel will invite 120 of those applicants for interviews at Johnson Space Center in January 2009.

I haven't heard anything yet, so there still may be a chance. :) It's projected that all of the selected applicants should be notified by the end of November.

There are many who have recieved the medical form or have heard that their references have been contacted...Good luck to all that applied!

I hope this is not considered
jinxing in any way shape or form...but...you know, right, that every single step into the selection you manage to reach will be thoroughly documented in Astronauticast interviews? ;-)

Hang in there, there's still hope! Just got my forms & ref.s contacted, incl. some overseas ref.s - that's no guarantee, of course, but...

Damaris,

I can't believe how excited I feel, even though my name isn't in the pool this time around! I'm hoping the best for you!

By the way-- how are you keeping in touch with the other applicants? I hear there's some kind of network set up somewhere, but I've never been introduced to it.

Finger crossed for you Damaris, and keep the faith.

If I don't get selected what will I do with my brand new flight computer and headset. I bought the computer only because it will save me time on the ground school written test.

They've been sitting on top of one of my shelves for seven months in a plastic bag.

Good luck to you. I got my letter for the classII physical on Sat. Passed it on Wed. My first ref got the package on Sat, the 4th got it on Thu.
How did you get that 450 number?
Do you know how many will interview? 20 in class? How many teachers? (me)

Bill,
Congratulations on making it this far. The 450 number comes from a number of conversations applicants have had with the Astronaut Selection Office. We originally thought it was 400 but recently learned the number was actually 450. 120 will interview for a class of 15-20. The first two groups of interviewees (20 in first and 10 in second, I think) have already been notified. I have some more details in one of my blog posts: http://brianshiro.blogspot.com/2008/09/nasas-2009-astronaut-class-selection.html

Good luck!
Brian

Damaris, have you heard anything yet regarding the prescreening medical and such?
